Renault/Irisbus Citybus 12m (Historic)

Basic Information

The Irisbus Citybus 12M is a low-floor city bus produced between 1995 and 2005. In its early years, it was also known as the Renault Citybus 12M, and in France as the Renault/Irisbus Agora S. In the Czech Republic, the vehicle was produced in cooperation with Karosa in Vysoké Mýto, with the body shell and engine imported from France and then completed in the Czech Republic.

The Citybus 12M was an important model for the renewal of urban public transport in its time. It offered low-floor boarding, a more modern interior, an automatic transmission, and a layout suitable for city operation with frequent passenger exchange. It appeared in service in many Czech cities, including Prague, Brno, Hradec Králové, Pardubice, Liberec, and Jablonec nad Nisou.

In 2005, the Citybus 12M was replaced by the newer Irisbus Citelis 12M, which followed it both structurally and operationally.

Design and Operational Character

The Citybus 12M is a two-axle low-floor bus with the engine located at the rear of the vehicle. The low floor at the first and second doors made boarding easier for passengers, strollers, and people with reduced mobility. The stroller area was located opposite the second doors, and some vehicles could also be equipped with a kneeling function, allowing the body of the bus to tilt toward the curb.

The vehicle was known for its large rear section, rounded front design, and large bonded side windows. Compared to older high-floor buses, it represented a significant improvement in comfort and accessibility for urban public transport.

Irisbus Citybus 12M in Liberec

In Liberec, Irisbus Citybus 12M buses were part of the fleet of the public transport company of the city of Liberec. According to available records, 30 vehicles of this type were delivered to DP Liberec. They were manufactured between 2001 and 2003 and carried fleet numbers 351–380.

These buses were among the distinctive vehicles of Liberec public transport, especially during the first and second decades of the 21st century. They served on regular city routes and gradually helped replace older bus types. As in other Czech cities, they were later withdrawn from service due to age and replaced by newer vehicles.

Preserved photos from Liberec confirm that these vehicles were used in regular service, for example fleet number 354 in the area of Palachova Street and Zámecké Square, or fleet number 380 on route 600 Globus in the Kristiánov area.

Importance for Liberec Public Transport

Citybuses represented an important stage in Liberec's transition toward more modern low-floor bus transport. Compared to older buses, they offered more comfortable boarding, a more modern interior, and better accessibility for passengers. They operated in the streets of Liberec for a long time and became a typical bus of their era for many passengers.

From the perspective of Liberec public transport history, this vehicle represents the early 21st century well — a period when the fleet was gradually modernized and urban transport moved toward low-floor vehicles.

Irisbus Citybus 12M in Nord Bus Liberec

In Nord Bus Liberec, this bus is represented under the name Renault Citybus 12M. However, in real Liberec operation, these vehicles were listed as Irisbus Citybus 12M. This difference in naming comes from the historical development of the model, as older versions of the same model family were known as Renault Citybus 12M, while later vehicles carried the Irisbus name.

The in-game version of the vehicle is meant to represent an older era of Liberec bus transport. Compared to more modern vehicles such as the Iveco Urbanway, the Citybus feels older and more technical in the game. Its inclusion helps expand the game's fleet with a historically important vehicle type that actually operated in Liberec.

The in-game model mainly focuses on:

  • the appearance of a classic low-floor city bus,
  • the atmosphere of older Liberec public transport,
  • the characteristic body shape,
  • city bus interior,
  • functional doors,
  • driving from the driver's perspective,
  • use on routes inspired by real operation in Liberec.

The in-game vehicle does not have to be an exact copy of one specific fleet number, but it is based on a bus type that was actually operated in Liberec. The goal is to preserve its character, appearance, and importance for Liberec public transport.
